Rose’s affinity for food (and attitude towards food) was deeply influenced by two great persons: her mother and her brother. In our minds our uncle was a genius with a big appetite for the dramatic. He was a writer of plays, an actor who knew everything and a world traveller who invented silly languages and read every book that ever existed. His annual 2-3 week visit to our farm was the culinary highlight of our year! He and our mother would create and make the most exotic menus and we were the most enthusiastic guinea pigs. During one of his visits, they decided to make nougat.
